Frequently Asked Questions

About Charter Schools

What is a charter school?

A charter school is an independently run public school granted greater flexibility in its operations, in return for greater accountability for performance. The “charter” establishing each school is a performance contract detailing the school’s mission, program, students served, performance goals, and methods of assessment. Charter schools are not for profit and generally have smaller class sizes, a focus on the individual student, and more teacher autonomy.  Charter schools follow the state standards and participate in state level accountability assessments.

Do charter schools charge tuition?

No, charter schools are public schools that receive public funds. They cannot charge tuition for the regular school day. Charter schools tend to offer many of the benefits of a private school without the cost.  Charter schools are often described as a hybrid between public and private education.

Are charter schools all the same?

Charter schools can vary considerably with their educational philosophy, programs offered, leadership styles and academic expectations.  At HPPA, we firmly believe that all students can learn and if we establish high academic and behavioral expectations, our students will reach their full potential.

Is there an expectation of parent involvement at HPPA?

There is a significant amount of research that shows a strong relationship between parent involvement and student success in school.  We will have volunteer opportunities and recommend a minimum of 20 hours per year.  With that, we completely understand that for many of our parents, this is not possible! Please know that’s ok, we will get to know you in the car loop!! 😊

Harbour Pointe Programs and Offerings

Does HPPA offer a sports program?

Harbour Pointe will begin our athletic program in the 2027-28 school year. We will be participating in a league that includes 12 other charter schools and teams include students in grades 6-8.  It is challenging to compete in this league when we only have grade 6, so we will wait until our second year.  We will be participating in Boys/Girls soccer, Girls volleyball, Boys/Girls basketball, and potentially flag football.

Does HPPA offer after school clubs for students?

Yes, we will be offering clubs 1st and 2nd semesters club opportunities in a wide variety of interests including cooking, art, music, drama, sports/athletics, Lego, water color, and others depending on teacher option and interest. There is generally a nominal fee for each club.

Does HPPA offer extended day services for parents/guardians?

We will be offering before care beginning at 6:30am and after school care until 6:00pm each day. There will be a fee for this program in order to cover the cost of staffing. We firmly believe that if students need extended day services, there is no better place than our school!

Does HPPA serve gifted students?

Yes, by law, we must honor providing services for all identified gifted students.  With that, we firmly believe that our students in need of enrichment need to be challenged beyond the standard every day!

Does HPPA serve students with special needs?

Yes, we do provide services for students with disabilities as long as we are the least restricted environment.

What accelerated courses does HPPA offer?

We will be offering Algebra to our 7th and 8th grade students as well as Geometry and Biology to select 8th graders. Our students can potentially earn 3 high school credits by the time they graduate 8th grade.

Staffing and Management

Does Harbour Pointe have a “for profit” management company?

Approximately 75% of charter schools have a “for profit” management company that is hired to run the business and some of the academic aspects of the charter school. Management companies take up to 15% of the school funding to provide this service.

At HPPA, our experienced team of administrators and leaders will take on this role. As such, HPPA has eliminated this cost of hiring a management company and can apply these funds to teacher salaries, additional support staff, smaller class sizes, student resources, field trips, and other areas to better serve our students.

Are HPPA’s teachers certified?

Teachers employed by or under contract to a charter school are required to be certified by the State of Florida, just like teachers at district schools.

How do I apply for employment if I would like to join the HPPA team?

If you would like to apply for a position to join the team at HPPA, simply go to the website and complete the interest form and we will reach out to you.
